Redesigning the UP Fitness Band developer platform

Jawbone

Challenge

Jawbone, a health and wellness wearable technology startup, entrusted us with the redesign of their developer platform design, seeking particularly to enhance its overall user-friendliness and ensure its competitive standing among other influential players in the market. Sacred employed a strategic and user-centered approach in crafting a new set of features for the platform, along with corresponding designs.

Strategy-driven feature set

Tasked with narrowing on an initial MVP feature set, we applied a multi-pronged strategic algorithm to output the perfect feature list:

Informed by real software engineers

Features reflect gathered intel around how developers use these kinds of platforms, and what is motivating them

MVP philosophy

Features that offer high value to users at low engineering costs are generally prioritized

Informed by the competitive landscape

Features reflect what other best-of-market developer platforms include

Documentation

Users learn what can be done, and the technical details of how to do it

The features we include

An “Overview” guide helps new users quickly understand what’s available and how to get set up

Inline links (in blue) point users to relevant documentation, while a “What’s next” section points them to what is typically read after this documentation page

User dashboard

Users dive into the functionality: all the details of creating an app, hooking it up to Jawbone’s API, and maintaining it

The features we include

Four intuitive tabs group all user actions and edits on the app, enabling focused task completion without overwhelming details

Blue inline links direct users to relevant documentation, with a "What's next" section indicating subsequent reading material

Tools & support

For potential users with questions, or new users having trouble

Marketing what matters to developers

The product’s landing page highlights exactly what our user research participants indicate they value most in a developer platform

What we highlight

Authentication methods, platform uptime, and platform speed–the three most important things to developers

A quick overview of what data from Jawbone’s fitness bands the platform can track

A small gallery of other amazing apps that have utilized this platform

A simple visual aesthetic for a complex task

Due to the highly functional nature of the product, we opted for simple yet elegant visuals that serve to quietly foster ease of digestibility and navigability without shouting or distracting
